EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, anchored in the waters of Beykoz, a health resort on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, Turkey. The image was taken from the deck of her sister ship, HMS Iron Duke, which is also visible in the foreground. The Iron Duke-class battleships were named in honor of renowned British military leaders, with HMS Marlborough being named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Constructed at Devonport Royal Dockyard between January 1912 and June 1914, HMS Marlborough entered service just prior to the outbreak of World War I. After the war, she was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet and played a significant role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea from 1919 to 1920. HMS Marlborough also took part in the Greco-Turkish War. In this photograph, taken circa 1923, the battleship appears serene and powerful, a testament to the British naval might during the interwar period. The scenic backdrop of Beykoz and the Bosphorus adds to the allure of this historic image.
