This copperplate engraving, taken from Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature published in London in 1820, showcases an enchanting collection of harps. At the center of the image, the Harp of Brian Boru, a national symbol of Ireland, is depicted with its elegant curved shape and intricately carved decorations. The Harp of Brian Boru, a mythical instrument believed to have magical powers, is said to have been played at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, where Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland, defeated the Viking invaders. To the left of the Brian Boru harp, a Silver Prize Harp is displayed. This type of harp was commonly used in competitions and was favored for its rich, resonant sound. The Silver Prize Harp is adorned with intricate engravings and delicate silver inlays, making it a true work of art. On the right side of the image, a Bell Harp is depicted. Bell Harps, also known as Cranford Harps or Waites, were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were smaller than traditional harps and had a unique sound due to the use of bells instead of strings. Bell Harps were often used for outdoor events and processions, as their sound could carry over long distances.
