The General Strike - travelling by trailer

Londoners travelling by a steam-wagon and trailer combination past the Royal Exchange in the City of London during the General Strike. In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of solidarity and determination during the historic General Strike of 1926 in London. The image shows a crowd of Londoners travelling past the Royal Exchange in the City of London, making their way to support the ongoing strike by coal miners. The miners had called for action in response to the threat of wage cuts, and although the strike only involved key industrial sectors such as docks, electricity, gas, and railways, it gained widespread attention and support. In the photograph, we see a steam-wagon and trailer combination making its way through the streets, carrying passengers who have come out to show their solidarity with the striking workers. The faces of the Londoners in the image are set with determination and resolve, reflecting the importance of the cause they have come out to support. The General Strike, which took place in early May 1926, lasted for nine days, but ultimately collapsed due to a lack of real public support and well-organised government emergency measures. Despite its brief duration, the strike remains an important moment in British history, highlighting the power of collective action and the struggle for workers' rights. This photograph, taken on May 15, 1926, is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in industrial history and the solidarity that can be found in the face of adversity. It is an image that continues to resonate with us today, as we reflect on the importance of standing together in the face of challenges and fighting for what we believe in.
