This oval portrait depicts Franz Sonnius, also known as François Larmessin (1506-1576), a prominent Flemish theologian and humanist of the Renaissance period. Sonnius was born in Tournai, in the Spanish Netherlands, and studied at the University of Louvain. He later became a professor of theology at the same institution, where he gained a reputation for his scholarly pursuits and his commitment to the reform of the Church.
