EDITORS COMMENTS
Ferdinand Baptista Schill, a German soldier and patriot, is depicted in this historic print from the late 18th century. Born in 1776, Schill began his military career in the Austrian army but later joined the Prussian forces during the War of the First Coalition against revolutionary France. In 1805, Schill led a successful cavalry charge against the French at the Battle of Pultusk, earning him the nickname "The Thunderbolt of the North." However, Schill's most famous exploit came during the War of the Fourth Coalition against Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1808, he raised a volunteer corps of disgruntled Prussian soldiers and deserters from the French army, and together they became known as the "Free Corps of Schill." With a motley crew of only 1,500 men, Schill managed to hold off the French advance for several weeks, inflicting heavy casualties and causing significant damage to their supply lines. Despite his successes, Schill's forces were eventually overwhelmed, and he was killed in action on October 16, 1809. His death marked the end of the Free Corps of Schill and dealt a significant blow to the Prussian war effort. This print captures the image of a brave and determined soldier, who, despite being outnumbered and outmatched, refused to give in to the French advance. Ferdinand Baptista Schill remains a symbol of German military resistance during the Napoleonic Wars and a hero in German history.
