EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, three young royals are captured in a moment of playful innocence around the turn of the 20th century. Pictured from left to right are Prince Edward of York, later King Edward VIII (b. 1894); Princess Victoria of York, later Princess Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (b. 1897); and Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI (b. 1895). The image, taken around 1900, offers a rare glimpse into the early lives of these future monarchs. Edward, the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary, is seen with a mischievous grin on his face, his eyes sparkling with amusement. Next to him, Princess Mary, the elder daughter, gazes directly at the camera with a serious expression, her hands folded demurely in her lap. The youngest, Prince Albert, sits on the ground, his attention focused on an unseen object, perhaps a toy or game. This photograph holds significant historical importance, as it captures the three siblings before they assumed the thrones of England and Scotland. Edward VIII's abdication in 1936 led to his brother Albert's ascension as King George VI, and Mary's marriage to the Duke of Gloucester's brother, Henry, Lord Lascelles, in 1922 made her the Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood. The image is a poignant reminder of the children's shared history and the weight of responsibility that awaited them in their future roles as monarchs. This photograph is a valuable addition to any collection of royal history or family memorabilia.
