EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the determined visage of Major General Edward Braddock, the British commander-in-chief of forces in America during the mid-18th century. Born in Ireland in 1695, Braddock rose through the ranks of the British Army, earning a reputation as a capable and ambitious leader. In 1755, he led a significant expedition against the French Fort Duquesne, located in present-day Pennsylvania, with the goal of expanding British territorial claims in North America. Braddock's uniform in this portrait reflects the grandeur and authority of his position. He wears a red coat with gold lace and a white waistcoat, adorned with a lapel button displaying the image of a lion. A white cravat is visible at his neck, and a wig covers his head. Atop his hat, a plume of feathers adds a touch of elegance and distinction. Despite his impressive military record, Braddock's expedition against Fort Duquesne ended in disaster. On July 9, 1755, his forces were ambushed by a combined French and Native American force, resulting in heavy British losses and the death of Braddock himself. However, his failure did not diminish his legacy. Braddock's expedition marked the beginning of the French and Indian War, which ultimately led to British control of North America. This historical portrait offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of military strategy, colonial expansion, and the clash of European powers on the American continent.
