EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, taken at Mansion House on 20 October 1948, we find Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the company of his beloved uncle, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Lord Louis Mountbatten (1900-1979). The two royals are attending a National Playing Fields Association (NPFA) dinner, an annual event aimed at promoting and preserving recreational spaces for the benefit of the public. Prince Philip, then aged 33, had recently married Queen Elizabeth II in November 1947 and was settling into his new role as the consort of the monarch. His uncle, Earl Mountbatten, was a pivotal figure in his life, having served as his mentor and confidant since childhood. Mountbatten, a decorated naval officer and statesman, had played a significant role in the Prince's upbringing and education. The Duke and Earl are seen here in formal attire, with Philip wearing the uniform of the Royal Navy, which reflected his long-standing naval career. The Earl, who was the last Viceroy of India, dons his full dress uniform adorned with numerous medals and decorations. The setting of the Mansion House, an historic London landmark, adds an air of grandeur and sophistication to the scene. The NPFA dinner was an opportunity for the royals to engage with various dignitaries and guests, as well as to promote the importance of sports and recreational activities for the community. This photograph captures a moment of warmth and camaraderie between the Duke and his uncle, underscoring their deep bond and shared commitment to public service. The image is a poignant reminder of the close relationship between Prince Philip and Earl Mountbatten, a bond that would tragically be severed when Mountbatten was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army in 1979. This photograph, therefore, holds a special significance as a testament to their shared history and the enduring connection between the two men.
