Kensington Palace and Queen Victorias Statue, London, 20th Century

Kensington Palace and Queen Victorias Statue, London, 20th Century. Originally built in the 17th century as the residence of the Earl of Nottingham, Kensington Palace was acquired by King William III in 1689. The King desired a residence close to London but away from its smoky air which aggravated his asthma. At the time Kensington was a village outside the capital and fitted the bill perfectly. The palace was improved and extended by Sir Christopher Wren and a carriage road was built connecting it with Hyde Park Corner. Today Kensington Palace is the official residence of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Kent and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Postcard from The Souvenir Album, Views of London And The River Thames, From London To Oxford, (London, 20th Century)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of Kensington Palace and Queen Victoria's statue in London during the 20th century. Originally built as the residence of the Earl of Nottingham in the 17th century, Kensington Palace became a cherished royal abode when King William III acquired it in 1689. The king sought a retreat close to London yet away from its polluted air that worsened his asthma, and Kensington Village perfectly fulfilled this requirement. Over time, Sir Christopher Wren enhanced and expanded the palace, while a carriage road was constructed to connect it with Hyde Park Corner. Today, Kensington Palace serves as the official residence for esteemed members of British royalty such as the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Duke and Duchess of Kent, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. The postcard itself hails from "The Souvenir Album: Views of London And The River Thames" showcasing various picturesque locations along this iconic river route from London to Oxford. This particular image captures not only architectural splendor but also highlights nature's beauty with lush plants adorning paths leading up to Queen Victoria's statue. As we gaze upon this stunning print captured by an unknown creator, we are transported back in time to witness both historical significance and artistic excellence intertwined within one frame. It is a testament to Britain's rich heritage and enduring legacy that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
