Divers inside underwater house off the coast of Malta
Brian Ray, 27, and Peter Newman (in diving gear) during a coffee break inside the Underwater House, with its stool and life support box. Brian is using the telephone. The inflatable house was anchored to the seabed, some 50 feet deep, in Paradise Bay, off the coast of Malta. It was equipped with lighting, telephone and immersion heaters with which the inhabitants could make hot drinks. It was constructed by teams of engineers and diving enthusiasts from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology. It was 9ft long and 6ft wide, constructed from rubberised material on a steel frame, and weighed around 500 lb. The team leader was David Baume who hoped it would be the first of a series of low cost underwater living spaces from which scientists could explore the seas. David and some other team members were able to spend a night 30 feet below the surface. The following day a severe storm caused the house to collapse. Date: 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph taken in 1969, we find two intrepid divers, Brian Ray and Peter Newman, taking a coffee break inside the innovative Underwater House off the coast of Malta. The house, located some 50 feet deep in Paradise Bay, was a groundbreaking engineering feat designed to provide a living space for scientists to explore the depths of the sea. Constructed by teams of engineers and diving enthusiasts from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology, the Underwater House measured 9ft long and 6ft wide, and weighed around 500 lb. The structure was made from rubberized material on a steel frame and was equipped with essential amenities such as lighting, a telephone, and immersion heaters, allowing the inhabitants to make hot drinks. Team leader David Baume had envisioned the Underwater House as the first of a series of low-cost underwater living spaces that would enable researchers to study marine life and oceanic phenomena in their natural habitat. Baume and some team members even managed to spend a night 30 feet below the surface. However, the Underwater House's tenure underwater was short-lived. The following day, a severe storm caused the house to collapse, marking the end of this pioneering underwater dwelling. Despite its brief existence, the Underwater House remains an inspiring example of human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of knowledge that drives scientific exploration.
