EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving depicts the day before the historic Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, which took place on July 16, 1212, in what is now Spain. The scene unfolds with King Alfonso VIII of Castile (1155-1214) and his Christian coalition, comprised of forces from Aragon, Navarre, Portugal, and other regions, encamped for the impending confrontation against the Almohad army of Caliph al-Nasir Muhammad (1199-1213). In the foreground, Alfonso VIII, dressed in royal attire and adorned with a crown, is shown conferring with ecclesiastical leaders, including a bishop, who holds a religious text. Knights and soldiers from various Christian realms gather around their leaders, preparing for the upcoming battle. Horses are saddled, and weapons, including swords and crosses, are readied. A loyal dog sits at the feet of the king, symbolizing loyalty and protection. The banner of Castile, bearing the emblem of the cross, flutters in the wind, signifying the strong religious motivation behind the Christian forces. The diverse group of warriors, representing the various Christian kingdoms, stand united in their determination to defend their lands and advance the Reconquista – the centuries-long process of reclaiming the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. The Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa proved to be a significant turning point in the history of Spain, as the Christian forces decisively defeated the Almohad army, leading to a shift in the balance of power in the region. This evocative image captures the spirit of the day before this momentous battle, with its depiction of the Christian coalition's unity, determination, and faith.
