This image depicts the renowned French playwright Corneille (1606-1684) in the character of Matamore from his play "L'Illusion Comique," first performed in Paris in 1636. The play, a masterpiece of 17th-century French theatre, is a complex and intriguing exploration of love, illusion, and reality. Corneille, whose real name was Pierre-Corneille Labiche, was a leading figure in the development of French classical drama. "L'Illusion Comique" is considered one of his greatest works, and it continues to be performed and studied around the world today. The play tells the story of Clitandre, a young man who is deceived into believing that his beloved Ismene has been unfaithful to him. In his despair, he vows to take his own life.
