The image, taken in August 1860 as they were leaving Melbourne, captures the determination and resolve in their eyes as they embarked on the first recorded crossing of the vast Australian continent from south to north. Robert O'Hara Burke (1821-1861) and William John Wills (1834-1861) were two intrepid explorers who dared to challenge the unknown and push the boundaries of human endurance. Their expedition, known as the Burke and Wills Expedition, was a bold attempt to cross the uncharted interior of Australia and establish an overland route from Melbourne in the south to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north. The photograph captures the excitement and anticipation of the moment as the men and their team set off on their historic journey. Burke, dressed in his explorer's uniform, stands tall and confident, while Wills, with a determined look in his eyes, holds a map and points the way forward.
