In the chaotic and brutal landscape of the Western Front during the First World War, the relentless grind of trench warfare demanded an unyielding supply of ammunition to sustain the troops in their relentless offensive. In this evocative image captured by renowned war artist Fortunino Matania in January 1917, two British soldiers are seen hauling a heavy box of ammunition towards a newly-captured trench.
