The Battle of Terheide, painted by Willem van de Velde I in 1657, captures a pivotal moment in the Anglo-Dutch War of 1652-1654. The battle took place on August 2, 1653, in the North Sea off the coast of Texel, Holland. In this dramatic scene, Dutch Admiral Maarten Harpertsz Tromp (1629-1653) leads the attack against the English fleet, with his flagship, the "Prinses Maria," prominently displayed at the center of the Dutch line. The English fleet, under the command of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, is shown attempting to break through the Dutch defenses. The Battle of Terheide was a significant engagement in the First Anglo-Dutch War, which was primarily fought over trade and colonial interests in Europe and the Americas.
