The Battle of Sempach, fought on July 9, 1386, is a pivotal moment in Swiss history as it marked the defeat of Leopold III, Duke of Austria, and his army at the hands of the Swiss confederation. This historic print captures the decisive moment of the battle, where Arnold von Winkelried, a Swiss knight, is depicted breaking the line of the Austrian spearmen. Leopold of Austria, who had been expanding his territories into Swiss lands, led an army of around 12,000 men to quell the rebellion.
