EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Sempach, fought on July 9, 1386, is a pivotal moment in Swiss history as it marked the defeat of Leopold III, Duke of Austria, and his army at the hands of the Swiss confederation. This historic print captures the decisive moment of the battle, where Arnold von Winkelried, a Swiss knight, is depicted breaking the line of the Austrian spearmen. Leopold of Austria, who had been expanding his territories into Swiss lands, led an army of around 12,000 men to quell the rebellion. The Swiss forces, though outnumbered, were determined to defend their lands. The battle took place near the town of Sempach in present-day Switzerland. The Swiss strategy was to lure the Austrians into a marshy area, where their heavy armor would hinder their mobility. Arnold von Winkelried, a knight from the canton of Unterwalden, played a crucial role in the Swiss victory. He led a charge against the Austrian spearmen, breaking their ranks and allowing the Swiss infantry to advance. The print vividly illustrates the heroism of Arnold von Winkelried as he charges forward, with the Austrian spearmen closing in around him. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Swiss forces were able to turn the tide of the battle, leading to a decisive victory. The Battle of Sempach is considered a turning point in Swiss history, as it solidified their reputation as a formidable military power and marked the beginning of their rise as a confederation. This print is a testament to the bravery and determination of the Swiss forces and the pivotal role that Arnold von Winkelried played in the battle. The Battle of Sempach remains an important part of Swiss history and continues to be celebrated as a symbol of national pride.
