Located in the highlands of present-day Lesotho, Thaba Bosigo was a formidable fortress that played a pivotal role in the resistance against British encroachment into Basutoland. The mountainous landscape, dotted with thatched huts and boulders, provides a striking backdrop to the scene. Masupha, a skilled military leader, had built the stronghold on the steep slopes of Thaba Bosigo, making it nearly impregnable. The Basutos, also known as the Basotho people, were a formidable force, renowned for their warrior culture and military prowess. The Gun War, also known as the First Basuto War, began in 1880 when the British, under the leadership of Sir Garnet Wolseley, sought to extend their control over Basutoland. Masupha and his people, however, were determined to defend their land and way of life. The war raged on for several months, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Despite their bravery and determination, the Basutos were eventually defeated. Masupha and his followers were forced to surrender, and Basutoland became a British protectorate.
