Sketch Map of Mount Erebus showing routes of ascent, c1912, (1913)

Sketch Map of Mount Erebus showing routes of ascent, from plane table map by F. Debenham, c1912, (1913). Erebus is the second-highest volcano in Antarctica and the southernmost active volcano on Earth. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a sketch map of Mount Erebus, highlighting the routes of ascent. Dating back to 1912 and published in 1913, this map is an integral part of the historical Terra Nova Expedition led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. As the second-highest volcano in Antarctica and the southernmost active volcano on Earth, Mount Erebus served as a significant destination for scientific exploration. The British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) aimed to continue Scott's previous scientific work while also striving to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Alongside Captain Scott were various experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring numerous challenges and hardships caused by blizzards and dwindling supplies along their journey towards the South Pole; Captain Scott and his team comprising Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates Lieutenant Henry Bowers Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached their objective only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by adverse weather conditions on their return journey and running out of provisions at critical moments; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were discovered eight months later alongside poignant diaries detailing their heroic efforts. Preserved within "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , this sketch map serves as a testament to both human resilience and scientific exploration amidst challenging circumstances.
