The assembly of clerks was called the parliament and each year they elected a king as their leader. In the 16th century, they had to rename their leader, henceforth calling him a chancellor, reputedly by order of Henry III. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Seal of the King of the Basoche, a guild of legal clerks in 16th century France. The Basoche played a crucial role in the Paris court system under the pre-revolutionary French monarchy. Each year, these dedicated clerks elected a leader known as their king, who represented them in matters concerning law and politics. In this 19th century reproduction of an original 16th century illustration by Paul Lacroix, we witness a moment frozen in time. The engraving depicts a solemn figure sitting on his throne-like chair, holding up the seal that symbolizes his authority. This image transports us back to an era when occupation and profession were deeply intertwined with one's identity. The intricate details captured in this monochrome print allow us to appreciate both the historical significance and artistic craftsmanship behind it. It serves as a reminder of how traditions evolve over time; during Henry III's reign, for instance, the title "king" was replaced with "chancellor". Such changes reflect not only shifts within society but also highlight how power dynamics can shape language itself. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from The Arts of Middle Ages and at the Period of Renaissance by Paul Lacroix (London, 1870), we are reminded that even centuries-old artifacts continue to hold relevance today. They provide glimpses into our collective past while inspiring contemplation about our present circumstances.
