EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Richard Owen, a renowned British naturalist from the 19th century. Born in 1804, Owen initially pursued a career as a surgeon before making significant contributions to the fields of anatomy and paleontology. In fact, it was he who coined the term "dinosaur" in 1841 to describe the fossilized reptiles that had been discovered. Despite his remarkable achievements, Owen held contrasting views with Charles Darwin regarding evolution. He firmly believed that natural selection alone was insufficient to explain this complex process. This disagreement sparked controversy within scientific circles during their time. The photograph captures Owen's dignified presence as he stands dressed in an academic gown, symbolizing his role as a professor and scientist at Oxford University. His intense gaze reflects both his passion for zoology and his dedication to unraveling the mysteries of ancient life through paleontological research. As one of Britain's most prominent figures in science, Richard Owen left an indelible mark on the field of biology. This portrait serves as a testament to his intellectual prowess and enduring legacy within the scientific community. Preserved by The Strand Magazine in London back in 1891, this engraving offers us a glimpse into the life and work of this influential naturalist whose discoveries continue to shape our understanding of Earth's prehistoric past today.
