Stages in human evolution

Human evolution. Illustration showing stages in the evolution of humans. At left, proconsul (23-15 million years ago) is depicted hypothetically as an African ape with both primitive and advanced features. From it Australopithecus afarensis (>4- 2.5 Myr BP) evolved and displayed a bipedal, upright gait walking on two legs. Homo habilis (2.5 Myr BP) was truly human ("homo") resembling Australopithecus but also used stone tools. About 1.5 Myr BP Homo erectus (at centre) appeared in Africa, used fire, wooden tools, and migrated from Africa into Eurasia. Homo neanderthalensis (200, 000 years BP) lived in Europe and Middle East and was closely related to modern humans (right)

1824 Bucklands Megalosaurus jaw no tint

1824 Uncoloured (original) Double quarto Plate XL of Megalosaurus jaw and teeth drawn by Mary Moreland, from William Buckland's "Notice on the Megalosaurus or great Fossil Lizard of Stonesfield". Transactions of the Geological Society of London, series 2, vol 1: 390 -396. A monumental year in palaeontology seeing (in this volume) both Buckland's first scientific description of a dinosaur, Megalosaurus, and Conybeare's first validation of long necked Plesiosaurs and scientific reconstructions of Plesiosaurs and Ichthyosaurs. Mary Moreland who drew the plates would later become Rev. Buckland's wife. These were some of the very few bones from which Richard Owen would base his reconstruction of Megalosaurus for Waterhouse Hawkins Crystal Palace reconstructions in 1854. The jaw is still on display in the Oxford Museum

1814 Mary Anning first ichthyosaur skull Featured Print

1814 Mary Anning first ichthyosaur skull

Temnodontosaurus platydon. First scientific illustration of Mary Anning's (and the world's) first ichthyosaur skull (actually found by her brother Joseph in 1811 and the body excavated by her in 1812 -some cite 1810 and 11). Folio size, It comes from an 1814 paper in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society by Sir Everard Home (1756-1832) illustrated by Clift. Home was the first geologist to publish detailed reports and illustrations on ichthyosaurs (previous more fragmentary remains had been misidentified as crocodiles) but he did a poor job, naming them Proteosaurus for a semblance to salamanders in 1819 - a name that was hence widely ignored. Preference was given to Konig's unpublished suggestion of the name Ichthyosaur, and De La Beche and Conybeare soon came to write the definitive early papers on ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. The specimen is still in the British Museum
