EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a group of Pulcinelli, captured in the mid-18th century by Italian Venetian painter and printmaker Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The image, created with pen and wash on paper, exudes a sense of entertainment and whimsy. Tiepolo was a highly esteemed artist who not only worked in Italy but also left his mark in Germany and Spain. Known for his grand frescoes adorning churches and palaces, he was elected President of the Academy of Padua during his illustrious career. However, this particular artwork reveals another side to Tiepolo's talent - his ability to capture lively characters through etchings. The Pulcinelli depicted here are clowns or entertainers from the 18th century theater tradition. They were popular figures known for their comedic performances that brought joy to audiences across Europe. This print is part of "The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo" collection compiled by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln in 1928. Originally owned by Henry Oppenheimer in London, this piece holds historical significance as it represents an era when art served as both amusement and cultural expression.
