Old Mill - Reemss Creek, 1872. Creator: Frederick William Quartley

Old Mill - Reemss Creek, 1872. Water mill on Reems Creek, a tributary of the French Broad River, North Carolina, USA:one of the landmarks of the days when it was a struggle between the Indian and the pale-face as to which should hold the land. The creek rises in the Black Mountains, and empties into the French Broad; and the mill is historic as being the oldest building this side of the mountains. It was built there by the settler from whom its name is derived, as a sort of fort, something of a store, and a little of a mill. The old ford of the French Broad is just at the mouth of the creek, and it is a part of the tradition of the neighborhood that Daniel Boone here first learned to shoot Indians and bears. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

Old Mill - Reemss Creek, 1872 - A Glimpse into the Historic Struggles of Land Ownership

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print by Frederick William Quartley transports us back to a significant era in American history. The image showcases an old water mill nestled on the banks of Reems Creek, a tributary of the French Broad River in North Carolina. As we gaze upon this picturesque scene, we are reminded that this mill was once at the center of a fierce battle for land between Native Americans and European settlers. The creek itself originates from the majestic Black Mountains before merging with the mighty French Broad River. This particular mill holds immense historical value as it stands as one of the oldest structures on this side of the mountains. Built by an early settler whose name it bears, it served multiple purposes—a fortification against potential threats, a modest store for essential supplies, and a small-scale milling operation. Interestingly, just near where Reems Creek meets the French Broad lies an ancient ford that played a crucial role in local lore. Legend has it that renowned frontiersman Daniel Boone honed his skills here—learning to fend off both indigenous tribes and formidable bears. Preserved within "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1872, Quartley's masterful depiction invites us to reflect upon our nation's complex past while marveling at its natural beauty.
