Maidens Rock, Lake Pepin, 1874. Creator: John Filmer

Maidens Rock, Lake Pepin, 1874. Rock formation on Lake Pepin, Wisconsin, USA. The great tradition of death and sorrow belongs to Maidens Rock...Winona was a young girl of that confederacy...which the French called Sioux...She loved a hunter of the same division of the confederacy, but her parents wished her to marry a warrior of the Wapesha division...The day before the union she ascended a bluff of great height, whose upper part is a sheer precipice...and threw herself...from the height, being dashed to pieces in the great buttress of rocky debris below. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. Maidens Rock, Lake Pepin, 1874

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports us back to the enchanting landscape of Lake Pepin in Wisconsin, USA. The image captures a stunning rock formation rising majestically from the shore of the lake, standing as a silent witness to an ancient legend steeped in tragedy and sorrow. According to local lore, Winona, a young girl belonging to the Sioux confederacy, found herself torn between her heart's desire and her parents' wishes. She was deeply in love with a hunter from her own division but was expected to marry a warrior from the Wapesha division. Unable to bear this conflict any longer, Winona made an agonizing decision. The day before her arranged union, she climbed up a towering bluff overlooking Lake Pepin. At its peak lay an unforgiving precipice where Winona chose to end her life rather than betray her true love or defy her family's expectations. Her body plummeted down into the rocky debris below. This haunting tale has become part of Maidens Rock's legacy - forever etched into its very existence. John Filmer beautifully captured this poignant moment in time through his lens and immortalized it for generations to come. As we gaze upon this evocative photograph today, we are reminded of both the enduring power of nature and the depths of human emotion. It serves as a reminder that even within breathtaking landscapes like Lake Pepin lies stories untold and emotions unspoken – tales that continue to resonate long after their protagonists have departed from this earthly realm.
