The Levee at St. Louis, 1874. Creator: W. Roberts
The Levee at St. Louis, 1874. Paddle steamers on the Mississippi at St Louis, Missouri, USA. St. Louis is destined for a great future. The magnificent bridge just completed, one of the largest and handsomest in the world, over which all the trains from the East directly enter the city, will have a great effect upon its fortunes. One distinguishing feature of the city is the number of huge steamboats that line its levee; but this feature is scarcely so notable now as it was a generation ago, before railroads had competed with steamboats for freight and passenger traffic. The steamers of the largest class descend the river to New Orleans.... From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

The Levee at St. Louis, 1874 - A Glimpse into the Past
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a bustling scene on the levee of St. Louis in 1874. Paddle steamers gracefully glide along the mighty Mississippi River, showcasing the city's vibrant trade and transportation hub. St. Louis, Missouri, is depicted as a city destined for greatness with its recent completion of a magnificent bridge - one of the largest and most beautiful in the world. This impressive structure allows trains from the East to directly enter the city, promising a prosperous future for St. Louis. The image highlights one distinctive feature of this thriving metropolis - an array of colossal steamboats that line its levee. However, their prominence has diminished over time due to competition from railroads for both freight and passenger traffic. As we delve into this snapshot from "Picturesque America" edited by William Cullen Bryant, we are transported back to an era when steamboats were essential lifelines connecting cities along the riverbanks. The Lady Lee stands out among these paddle steamers as it descends towards New Orleans. This historic photograph not only showcases St. Louis' geographical significance but also offers us a glimpse into America's rich past during the 19th century. It serves as a reminder of how transportation advancements have shaped our nation's progress while preserving moments frozen in time through artistry and craftsmanship.
