EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1854, showcases the simultaneous launch of H.M. Gun-Boat "Pelter" and the Portuguese Steam-ship "Dom Pedro Secondo" at Northfleet on the River Thames in Kent. The Gun-Boat "Pelter," which Mr. Pitcher had been commissioned to build for Her Majesty's Navy, boasts impressive dimensions with a length of 100 feet, an extreme breadth of 22 feet, and a depth in hold of 7 feet 10 inches. The vessel's burden amounts to 212 tons, and its engines, manufactured by Messrs. Penn and Co, operate on the high-pressure principle, delivering an impressive 60 horsepower. The armament of the "Pelter" consists of two 95 cwt. guns, capable of firing solid shot of 8 inches in diameter. In the background, the Portuguese Steam-ship "Dom Pedro Secondo" takes shape, a fine example of maritime engineering. This steamship, also under the expert care of Mr. Pitcher, was constructed for the Portuguese Luiz de Camoes Steam Navigation Company as a passenger vessel. With its sleek design and advanced technology, the "Dom Pedro Secondo" was destined to make a significant impact on the transatlantic passage between Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro.
