EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the portrait of Humphry Duke of Gloucester, painted by artist Jacques Leboucq in 1909. Humphry Duke of Gloucester, born in 1391, was the fourth son of King Henry IV of England and Mary de Bohun. Known as the good Duke Humphrey, he was an important patron for England's humanists during his time. However, despite his reputation as a capable leader, his political dealings were often seen as inept and raised doubts about his suitability for such a title. The drawing attributed to Jacques le Boucq from the Library of Arras portrays him in medieval attire with a hat that adds an air of authority to his presence. The monochrome image showcases the historical significance attached to this fifteenth-century figure who played a crucial role in English history. His position within the Plantagenet dynasty and royal lineage further emphasizes his importance. This print is part of Historical Portraits collection published by The Clarendon Press in Oxford back in 1909. It serves as a reminder not only of Humphry Duke's influence but also highlights Leboucq's artistic talent and attention to detail.
