Hindoo Dance - from a native drawing, 1857. Creator: Unknown

Hindoo Dance - from a native drawing, 1857. Devotees outside a temple in India. The dancing takes place in the open air, and behind may be seen the peculiar architecture of a Hindoo temple, with its superincumbent pyramid. "Duara Suarga, " or Gate of Heaven, is sometimes inscribed at the entrance of these buildings. But an intelligent traveller says that the stealthy glances at a horrific group of diabolical idols, the strange noises, and the unequal and lurid flashes of light, when all around is darkness, made it much more like what imagination might picture as the entrance of the infernal regions [ie, Hell]. The form of the dome in our Illustration will forcibly remind travellers of the Pyramids of Sakarah, in Egypt'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'Hindoo Dance - from a native drawing, 1857,' depicts a lively dance performance taking place outside an intricately designed Hindu temple in India. The dancers, dressed in vibrant attire, are lost in the rhythm of the music, their movements mirroring the pulsating beats of the drums. The temple's unique architecture, with its pyramid-like structure and the inscription 'Duara Suarga' or 'Gate of Heaven,' stands majestically in the background. The scene transports us back to the 19th century, where travelers described the temple entrances as a stark contrast between the divine and the diabolical. The dark surroundings, the strange noises, and the flickering lights created an eerie atmosphere, making it seem more like the entrance to the underworld than a place of worship. The form of the temple dome bears a striking resemblance to the Pyramids of Sakarah in Egypt, adding to its mystique. The bullock carts and oxen-drawn carts in the foreground further emphasize the rural setting and the rich cultural heritage of the region. This engraving, published in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1857, provides a fascinating glimpse into the religious practices and traditions of India during that era. The image, with its intricate details and captivating storytelling, continues to intrigue and inspire us even today.
