Hermann Oberth, German physicist and engineer, c1960. Creator: Richard Krauss

Hermann Oberth, German physicist and engineer, c1960. Hermann Oberth (1894-1989) is considered to be one of the top three pioneers in modern rocketry and is credited with suggesting that space stations would be essential if humans wished to travel to other planets. Oberth was the only one out of the three (Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Robert Goddard are the other two) to see human spaceflight come to fruition. He was inspired by the tales of Jules Verne in From the Earth to the Moon and Travel to the Moon. He is also the author of Die Rakete zu den Planetenraumen, published in 1923. The book inspired many to pursue spaceflight, despite its challenges. Oberth was a guest at the Apollo 11 launch in July 1969 as well as at the launch of the STS-51J, Atlantis mission

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind of Hermann Oberth, a German physicist and engineer, circa 1960. Known as one of the top three pioneers in modern rocketry, Oberth's contributions to space exploration are immeasurable. His visionary ideas included the concept that space stations would be indispensable for interplanetary travel, long before it became a reality. Unlike his contemporaries Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Robert Goddard, Oberth had the privilege of witnessing human spaceflight become a tangible achievement. Inspired by Jules Verne's tales of lunar adventures, he authored "Die Rakete zu den Planetenraumen" in 1923 - a book that ignited countless dreams of conquering outer space despite its inherent challenges. Oberth's impact on the field was so profound that he was invited as an esteemed guest to witness both Apollo 11's historic launch in July 1969 and the STS-51J Atlantis mission. This photograph serves as a testament to his remarkable legacy. Richard Krauss skillfully captured Oberth's contemplative expression, revealing the depth of his intellect and dedication to science. The image showcases not only Oberth himself but also symbolizes an era marked by groundbreaking discoveries and extraordinary achievements in rocket engineering. As we gaze upon this portrait, we are reminded of Hermann Oberth's invaluable contributions to humanity's quest for knowledge beyond our planet Earth.
