Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). Finns of the St. Petersburg Province - Ayramoiset and Savakot, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photographic print from the ethnographic record of the Russian Empire, created by the renowned German ethnographer Karlis Huns. This image is taken from Sheet 39 of the two-volume work "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. The work was dedicated to Tsar Alexander II to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. The photograph showcases two Finnish ethnic groups, Ayramoiset and Savakot, residing in the St. Petersburg province during that era. The ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia was a comprehensive study of the diverse population of the empire, featuring 62 colored illustrations in volume one. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the various ethnic groups and their populations in the cities of the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map, indicating the regions inhabited by each group. Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia, was the mastermind behind this extensive work. The photograph of the Finns, Ayramoiset and Savakot, offers a glimpse into the traditional attire and cultural practices of these communities. The image serves as an essential historical record, providing valuable insights into the ethnic diversity of the Russian Empire during the 19th century. The ethnographic study reflects the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s, offering a fascinating window into the past. The work remains an essential resource for scholars and enthusiasts of Russian and European history, ethnography, and cultural studies. This photograph, in particular, stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Finnish communities in the St. Petersburg province during the Russian Empire's golden age.
