Couloir Cliffs, Granite Harbour, Showing the Camp Off the Piedmont Tongue, c1911, (1913)

Couloir Cliffs, Granite Harbour, Showing the Camp Off the Piedmont Tongue, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Couloir Cliffs, Granite Harbour, Showing the Camp Off the Piedmont Tongue" takes us back to the final expedition of renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers and more. Their mission was twofold: to continue scientific research in Antarctica and to be the first to reach the South Pole. This particular image captures a momentous scene from their journey. The rugged beauty of Couloir Cliffs in Granite Harbour serves as a backdrop for their campsite nestled off the Piedmont Tongue. It is an awe-inspiring sight that showcases both the harshness and allure of this icy wilderness. However, despite their valiant efforts and unwavering determination, fate had different plans for Scott's team. Upon reaching their long-awaited destination on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, tragedy struck as Scott and his remaining companions perished at the end of March. Eight months later, their bodies were found along with poignant diaries detailing their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This haunting photograph stands as a testament to both human resilience in pursuit of knowledge and exploration while serving as a somber reminder of those who sacrificed everything in search of discovery.
