EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of triumph and pride in the world of horse racing. Bois Roussel, a magnificent thoroughbred, is being led in by his owner Peter Beatty after their victorious run at the prestigious Epsom Derby in 1938. The jockey on board is none other than Edward Charles Elliott, known as Charlie Elliott, who was twice crowned British Champion flat racing jockey. Elliott's remarkable career spanned both England and France, where he rode for renowned trainer Marcel Boussac. His exceptional skills earned him a well-deserved place among the top jockeys of the 20th century according to Racing Post's rankings. Throughout his illustrious career, Elliott claimed victory in an impressive fourteen British Classic Races. In this photograph, we see Elliott wearing his signature cap while leading Bois Roussel towards the winners' enclosure. Both man and horse exude happiness and pride as they bask in their hard-earned success on the lush green grass of Epsom racecourse. The image beautifully captures not only a moment frozen in time but also represents the dedication and skill required to excel in equestrian sports. It serves as a testament to the timeless allure of horse racing and its ability to captivate audiences throughout history. This vintage print from Racehorses & Jockeys series by W. D. & H. O. Wills transports us back to an era when horseracing was at its peak, showcasing both elegance and excitement that defined this beloved sport during the 1930s.
