Battleship, Jockey: B. Hobbs, 1939. Battleship (1927-1958) was an American thoroughbred racehorse who is the only horse to have won both the American Grand National and the British Grand National steeplechase races. He won the 1938 Grand National when he was eleven years old ridden by Bruce Hobbs, the seventeen-year-old son of trainer Reg Hobbs. He was an unusual winner of the race in that he was entire. The last entire winner had been Grudon in 1901. From Racehorses & Jockeys, 1938 - A Series of 40. [W. D. & H. O. Wills, Bristol, 1939]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous victory in horse racing history. The image showcases the legendary Battleship, an American thoroughbred racehorse who achieved an extraordinary feat by winning both the American Grand National and the British Grand National steeplechase races. In this particular snapshot taken in 1939, Battleship is seen with his jockey, B. Hobbs. What makes this triumph even more remarkable is that Battleship was an entire horse, a rarity among winners of such prestigious races. The last time an entire horse had claimed victory at the Grand National was way back in 1901 with Grudon. This unique detail adds to the allure of this photograph. The picture portrays a side view of Battleship and his young jockey against a backdrop of lush country grass. Both man and animal exude confidence as they wear their respective attire - Hobbs donning a cap while seated atop his noble steed adorned in vibrant silks. This print not only commemorates an exceptional sporting achievement but also serves as a testament to the bond between man and horse throughout history. It transports us back to the thirties, offering us a glimpse into one of America's most celebrated racehorses' victorious moment on English soil.
