EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "HIGHWAY ROBBERY, 1922. Traveling: Highway Robbery Then and Now" takes us back to a time when travel was not as glamorous as it is today. The illustration, created by C. Herouard for a 1922 issue of La Vie Parisienne, depicts a comical scene that combines risqué humor with the reality of highway robbery. In this whimsical image, we see two men dressed in early 20th-century attire holding up an unsuspecting traveler on a deserted highway. The thief brandishes a gun while the other man searches through the victim's luggage for valuables. Despite the seriousness of their crime, there is an element of naughtiness and playfulness in their expressions. The setting adds to the intrigue - an old-fashioned hotel interior where guests are vulnerable to such holdups during their travels. The proprietor looks on helplessly as his guest becomes another victim of this audacious act. What makes this illustration truly unique is its fusion of nudity and comedy. One of the thieves appears shirtless, adding an unexpected twist to an already amusing scene. Overall, this vintage print captures both the dangers and lighter side of traveling in France during that era. It serves as a reminder that even though times have changed significantly since then, certain aspects remain timeless - like our fascination with adventure and mischievousness along life's highways.
