EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Drummers mitre cap from the 13th Regiment of Dragoons, dating back to 1751. The intricate embroidery on this fabric cap is a testament to the attention to detail and craftsmanship of the British School in the 18th Century. During this time, embroidered caps were primarily worn by certain types of cavalry. In fact, in 1678, each troop of Horse Guards had a troop of horse grenadiers added who donned similar caps to those worn by infantry grenadiers. The glamourous appearance of these grenadier caps was further exploited by cavalry drummers, whose uniforms were intentionally more ornate and spectacular than even those worn by officers and men. This particular cap holds historical significance as it was collected by Lieutenant-Colonel Antony P Lefroy. He served with the esteemed 13th Dragoons as both a captain and major between 1755 and 1783. As an officer himself, Lefroy recognized the value and beauty in preserving such artifacts that represented not only his regiment but also an era rich in military history. Now housed at the National Army Museum in London, this print allows us to appreciate not just its aesthetic appeal but also its cultural importance within British military tradition. It serves as a reminder of the dedication and artistry that went into creating these unique pieces for drummers – musicians who played an integral role in boosting morale during times of war or celebration.
