Saint Jerome, c. 1621 (oil on canvas)
499908 Saint Jerome, c.1621 (oil on canvas)
by Brugghen, Hendrick Ter (1588-1629); 149.22x125.41 (framed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Not all subjects are easy to identify. This museum long thought that the subject was the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, largely because tears are part of the standard representation of this ancient thinker. However, ter Brugghen omits the other crucial key to identifying Heraclitus--a globe
over which he weeps. Instead, the book and skull indicate the figure is Saint Jerome, known
for translating the Bible into Latin. The artist probably chose to show Jerome crying to intensify his penitence.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the painting "Saint Jerome" by Hendrick Ter Brugghen. Painted in 1621, this oil on canvas masterpiece measures 149.22x125.41 cm and is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. At first glance, it may be challenging to identify the subject of this artwork. For years, the museum believed it depicted the Greek philosopher Heraclitus due to the presence of tears, which symbolize his philosophical beliefs. However, ter Brugghen deviates from convention by omitting a globe over which Heraclitus traditionally weeps. Upon closer examination, it becomes clear that Saint Jerome is actually portrayed here. Known for translating the Bible into Latin, he holds a book and rests his hand upon a skull—a powerful symbol of mortality and penitence. The artist's choice to depict Saint Jerome shedding tears adds an intense sense of remorse and repentance to his portrayal. This half-length portrait captures him in deep thought and contemplation as he reflects on his religious devotion. Ter Brugghen's skillful execution brings out every detail with precision and realism—highlighting not only Saint Jerome's physical features but also conveying his inner emotions through subtle brushstrokes. This remarkable piece invites viewers to delve into its rich symbolism while appreciating both its technical mastery and profound spiritual depth—a true testament to Ter Brugghen's artistic brilliance.
