Galileo and his daughter Maria Celeste
Galilei Galileo (1564-1642), Italian physicist and astronomer, being guided by his daughter Maria Celeste (1600-1634), a nun. In 1633, Galileo was tried for heresy by the Roman Catholic Church for his support of the heliocentric Copernican theory. He was kept under house arrest for the rest of his life and later went blind. Princess Alice of Greece with her granddaughter, Dorothea
Princess Andrew of Greece (1885-1969), formerly Princess Alice of Battenberg, kissing her granddaughter, Princess Dorothea of Hesse-Cassel, the daughter of her fourth daughter, Princess Sophie. In the background can be seen Alice's eldest daughter, Princess Margarita, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. Princess Alice founded a nursing order of Greek Orthodox nuns, the Christian Sisterhood of Martha and Mary and is seen wearing a nun's habit which she adopted in later life. Date: c.1955
