EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork titled "Two Crowned Martyrs" created by the French School in the 13th century. The piece, currently housed at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, UK, is a prime example of Limoges champleve enamels. The technique used to create this masterpiece involved delicately gouging out shallow recesses on a hammered copper plate and filling them with powdered glass. When heated, the glass fused with the plate and formed distinct divisions that were polished to perfection. The resulting image boasts bold linear modeling and jewel-like colors. In this particular artwork, blue predominates as opposed to earlier examples where gilded backgrounds were more common. Notably, hands, feet, and faces of figures were sometimes crafted separately and attached using rivets. The two crowned martyrs depicted in this piece represent an important aspect of Christian religious history during the Middle Ages. Their regal crowns symbolize their devotion to their faith even unto death. With its rich colors and meticulous craftsmanship, this work of art transports viewers back in time to appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and historical significance. It serves as a testament to the skillful mastery of enamelwork during medieval times while also offering insight into religious practices from that era. Andrew Morris's photograph expertly captures every intricate detail of this remarkable artifact for all art enthusiasts to admire and cherish for years to come.
