HIV particles, artwork C016 / 8659

HIV particles, computer artwork. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The virus consists of an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome (pink), surrounded by an icosahedral (20-sided) protein nucleocapsid (coat, blue). The whole virus is enclosed in an envelope (green) derived from the host cells plasma membrane. The envelope has viral proteins integrated into it, including glycoprotein spikes that aid its attachment to host cells. HIV infects the immune systems T-lymphocytes, ultimately killing them, leading to a very weak immune system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of HIV particles, revealing the complex nature of this devastating virus. Created by artist Russell Kightley, this computer artwork provides a detailed representation of the components that make up HIV. At the center lies the RNA genome, depicted in a striking pink hue, which serves as the genetic material for replication and infection. Surrounding it is an icosahedral protein nucleocapsid coat in vibrant blue, giving shape and protection to the viral genome. The entire structure is enveloped in a green membrane derived from host cells' plasma membrane, with integrated viral proteins including glycoprotein spikes aiding its attachment to host cells. HIV's ability to infect T-lymphocytes within our immune system ultimately leads to their demise and results in a weakened immune response against infections. This depiction sheds light on how this pathogen operates at a microscopic level. The image not only highlights key biological features but also emphasizes the urgency for continued research and understanding of HIV/AIDS. By unraveling its complexities through virology and microbiology studies, scientists strive towards developing effective treatments or even finding a cure for this global health crisis. Russell Kightley's artwork masterfully captures both scientific accuracy and aesthetic appeal while reminding us of the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS.
