Carl Linnaeus, Swedish botanist

Carl Linnaeus. Caricature of the Swedish botanist and taxonomist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). Linnaeus was a great classifier of living organisms. In 1735, he published Systema Naturae (The Natural World) in which he divided flowering plants into classes based on the plant sex organs. He is considered the founder of modern taxonomy and, in 1749, he introduced binomial nomenclature. This gave each plant a generic latin noun (genus), followed by a specific adjective (species). Linnaeus opposed evolutionary theory, believing that no new species had been formed since the Creation, and that none had become extinct

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Carl Linnaeus, a renowned Swedish botanist and taxonomist. With a comical twist, this caricature showcases his significant contributions to the field of biology. Linnaeus was an exceptional classifier of living organisms, and in 1735, he published Systema Naturae, a groundbreaking work that divided flowering plants into classes based on their sex organs. Considered the founder of modern taxonomy, Linnaeus introduced binomial nomenclature in 1749. This revolutionary system assigned each plant a generic Latin noun followed by a specific adjective, providing clarity and uniformity in scientific naming conventions. While celebrated for his scientific achievements, it is worth noting that Linnaeus opposed evolutionary theory. Firmly believing that no new species had emerged since Creation and none had become extinct over time. Despite this controversial stance, his impact on biological classification cannot be understated. In this artwork set against a white background with vibrant colors adorning him, we see Linnaeus portrayed as both humorous and knowledgeable—a true representation of his character. The artist skillfully captures the spirit of this influential figure who left an indelible mark on botanical science.
