Over 220, 000 people died in the attacks, and thousands were injured. Japan surrendered a few days later. For the original version of this image, see T162/128

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the devastating moment when an atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. The image showcases the immense power and destruction unleashed by this unprecedented weapon during World War II. The vibrant colors bring to life the horror and chaos that unfolded on that fateful day. The column of smoke rising from the explosion is a chilling reminder of the lives lost and the city reduced to rubble. Standing six kilometers high with a base spanning three kilometers, it serves as a haunting testament to mankind's ability to harness destructive forces. This marked the first time an atomic bomb had been used in warfare, forever changing the course of history. Just three days later, another devastating attack would occur over Nagasaki, further escalating death tolls and injuries.
