EDITORS COMMENTS
This little 040 tank engine has arrived to double the steam power at the Bowes Railway depot at Springwell on 7th May 1981. The engine, built by Andrew Barclay of Kilmarnock in 1954, is the most recent addition to stock at the preserved colliery line. In this print from the 1980s, a group of five engineers can be seen meticulously preparing the newly arrived engine to be set on the rails. Their expertise and dedication are evident as they work together with precision and care. The mixed age range of these skilled individuals showcases their collective experience and knowledge in maintaining and operating steam engines. As they go about their tasks, one can almost feel their excitement for this new addition that will enhance the railway's capabilities. This snapshot captures a moment frozen in time - a journey back to an era when public transport relied heavily on railways. The sight of this majestic locomotive evokes nostalgia for a time when steam trains were not just modes of transportation but symbols of progress and innovation. As we admire this remarkable photograph, let us appreciate not only its historical significance but also recognize those who dedicated themselves to preserving our rich railway heritage.
