EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a memorable moment during Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret's royal tour of South Africa in March 1947. The young princesses, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, are seen here in high spirits as they boldly take the reins of the steam engine, with the Hon. F C Sturrock, South African Minister for Transport, looking on approvingly. Dressed in overalls and gloves, they eagerly engage with the engine's controls, including Princess Elizabeth sounding the whistle. This hands-on experience offered a unique opportunity for the princesses to connect with the people of South Africa and learn about the country's transportation industry. The image showcases the Princesses' youthful energy and curiosity, as well as their ability to embrace new experiences during their travels. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of the 1947 royal tour of South Africa and the special moments it produced.
