EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts Saint Simon the Zealot, one of the original twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. Known also as Saint Simeon or Saint Symeon, he is believed to have been a native of Galilee and a member of the Jewish sect of the Zealots, who were dedicated to the overthrow of Roman rule in Judea. After the crucifixion of Jesus, Saint Simon is said to have preached the Gospel in Egypt, spreading the message of love, forgiveness, and redemption to the people of that land. Later, Saint Simon was joined by his brother Jude, another apostle, and they embarked on a mission to share the teachings of Jesus in Persia. The two apostles faced great challenges in their evangelization efforts, as they encountered resistance from the Persian rulers and the Zoroastrian priesthood. Despite these obstacles, they persevered, and Saint Simon is believed to have been martyred by crucifixion in Persia around the year 70 AD. This historical print, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, captures the essence of Saint Simon's courage and dedication to spreading the word of Jesus. The image shows Saint Simon, dressed in the robes of an apostle, standing before a crucifix, his gaze fixed on the heavens as he offers a prayer of thanksgiving and strength. The hazy, dreamlike quality of the print adds to the sense of reverence and awe, transporting the viewer back in time to an era of faith and devotion. Saint Simon's legacy continues to inspire generations of Christians, reminding us of the power of faith, perseverance, and the enduring message of love and redemption.
