EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of "The Holy Parent" painting by Simon de Chalons, a masterpiece from the 16th century French art. In the center of the composition, we see Saint Anne, surrounded by her three successive husbands: Salome, Cleophas (the father of Marie Cleophas), and Joachim (the father of the Virgin Mary). The scene is filled with symbolism and religious figures. At the forefront lies Christ child in his cradle, supported by his mother, the Virgin Mary. Behind them stands Saint Anne wearing a bloodied white garment, while Saint Joseph raises his hands in reverence. To their left is Saint John the Evangelist with his mother Mary Salome and son James. And at the back stands Saint Anthony the Great holding his bell. Mary Cleophas is depicted alongside her sons: Jude, Simon, Joseph (known as "the righteous"), and James (also known as "the minor"). Two characters on the right side are Zebedee and Alphee—Zebedee being Mary Salome's husband—and both are shown praying. Simon de Chalons' attention to detail shines through this oil on walnut wood artwork. This print allows us to appreciate every brushstroke and intricate element within this historical piece housed at Musee des Beaux Arts d'Avignon. Leonard de Selva skillfully captured this image for Fine Art Finder without compromising its integrity or commercial use restrictions. It serves as a testament to both artistic talent and preservation efforts that allow us to admire such masterpieces even centuries later.
