EDITORS COMMENTS
This print commemorates the historic ascent of James Sadler from Merton Fields, Oxford on the 7th of July, 1810. James Sadler, the first Englishman to ascend in a hot air balloon on the 4th of October, 1784 from Christ Church Meadow in Oxford, once again took to the skies over two decades later. The image captures the excitement and anticipation of the crowd gathered at Merton Fields, eagerly watching as Sadler prepared for his ascent. The onlookers, dressed in the fashion of the early 19th century, are seen waving flags and cheering in support. The grandeur of the occasion is further emphasized by the large church in the background, adding a sense of historical significance to the scene. This print offers a unique glimpse into the past, transporting us back to an era where the simple act of flight was a remarkable spectacle, and the dreams of mankind reached new heights.
