In this historic photograph, Astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom is seen leaving his quarters at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on July 21, 1961, for a second attempt at his sub-orbital flight. The earlier attempt had been cancelled due to inclement weather. Grissom, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a test pilot, was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts selected by NASA in 1959. His first spaceflight, Mercury-Redstone 4, had taken place on July 21, 1961, making him the second American to orbit the Earth, after Alan Shepard. However, his second attempt, Mercury-Redstone 5, was delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions. Grissom is seen here in his casual attire, wearing a white shirt and slacks, as he steps out of his quarters with a determined look on his face. He carries a small bag in one hand and glances over his shoulder, perhaps to bid farewell to someone inside.
