EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the historic moment when Pope Pius IX, the longest reigning Pope in the modern era, was carried aloft during a procession through the streets of Rome on March 20, 1870. The Pope's decision to leave the Vatican and reside in the Quirinal Palace, the residence of the Kings of Italy, marked the end of the Papal States and the beginning of the Roman Question, a major point of contention between Italy and the Holy See. Pius IX, born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti in 1792, was elected Pope in 1846, at a time when Europe was undergoing significant political and social upheaval. His papacy was marked by a strong commitment to traditional Catholicism and opposition to the secularization of European society. Despite his conservative views, he is also remembered for his promotion of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, which was declared a dogma of the Catholic Church in 1854. In this photograph, the Pope is surrounded by cardinals and clergy as he is carried aloft, borne on the shoulders of his faithful followers. The image conveys a sense of both reverence and vulnerability, as the aging Pope, dressed in his ornate papal robes, appears small and fragile amidst the crowd. The procession, which wound its way through the streets of Rome, was a powerful display of the Pope's continued authority and the loyalty of his followers, even in the face of political upheaval and secularization. This historic photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous history of the Papacy and the challenges faced by Pope Pius IX during his long and eventful reign. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
