EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in time at the Whites Club golf tournament held in Sandwich, Kent, in the summer of 1938. Novelist Ian Fleming (1908-1964), the creator of the iconic James Bond character, is seen here enjoying a light-hearted moment with Kenneth Wagg. The tournament, hosted by the prestigious Whites Club, brought together some of the most prominent figures of the day for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie. Ian Fleming, who was born in London, was an avid golfer and a member of several exclusive golf clubs. His love for the sport is reflected in his novels, where James Bond is often seen playing golf or using the game to his advantage. Fleming's first James Bond novel, "Casino Royale," was published just a few years after this photograph was taken. Kenneth Wagg, on the other hand, was a British journalist and author. He was a regular contributor to The Daily Express and The Daily Mail, and wrote several books on golf and other sports. Wagg was also a keen golfer and a member of several golf clubs, including the Whites Club. The photograph offers a glimpse into the lives of these two influential men outside of their professional pursuits. It showcases their shared passion for golf and their enjoyment of the game in a relaxed and social setting. The image is a testament to the enduring appeal of golf as a pastime that brings people together, regardless of their backgrounds or accomplishments.
